According to the U.S Department of Veterans Affairs, Public Law 106-65 requires every eligible veteran to receive a military funeral honors ceremony. The Military Funeral Honors Program includes traditions within the funeral honors, intended to express deep gratitude for those who have served our nation.

Military Representatives In Attendance

According to the Department of Defense, the law defines a military funeral honors detail as consisting of two or more uniformed military persons, with at least one being a member of the veteran's parent service of the armed forces.

 

Playing of "Taps"

Military One Source states that the U.S. Army officially recognized the version of Taps we know today in 1874. Beginning in 1891, the playing of Taps became the standard at military funeral ceremonies, and in 2013, legislation was passed recognizing Taps as the "National Song of Military Remembrance." Although a live bugler is preferred, a ceremonial bugle or a high-quality recording on a stereo player may be used.

 

Presentation of the US Flag

The U.S. flag honors the memory of a service member or veteran's service to our country. The ceremonial folding and presentation of the flag is a tribute of lasting importance to our service members, veterans, and their families. Military One Source details that the flag is carefully draped on a closed casket so that the union blue field is at the head and over the left shoulder of the deceased veteran. After Taps plays, the flag is folded into the symbolic tricorn shape and presented to the next of kin or a close friend of the deceased veteran.

 

To receive military funeral honors, you must submit a request with the appropriate documentation as soon as possible. The military services need as much time as possible to organize the resources required for a military funeral honors detail. The Department of Defense calls for funeral home directors to request this type of service on behalf of the deceased veteran's family. Veterans organizations may also assist in providing military funeral honors.
